Strong Wind Warning – Safety is Our #1 Priority
At Sharkey’s, your safety always comes first. While kayaking is an incredible experience, strong winds can create hazardous conditions that make paddling unsafe. If the wind reaches dangerous levels, we must take action to protect you and your group from potential risks.
Why Strong Winds Are Dangerous for Kayaking
Wind plays a major role in water conditions, and when it becomes too strong, it can create serious safety concerns:
1. Increased Water Resistance
Strong winds make it much harder to paddle, causing rapid fatigue and making it difficult to return to the launch point.
2. Risk of Capsizing
High winds can create choppy waves that destabilize your kayak, increasing the risk of tipping over.
3. Limited Control & Navigation Issues
Gusty winds can push kayaks off course, making it challenging to steer and potentially carrying paddlers into unsafe areas.
4. Stronger Currents & Tides
Wind-driven currents can make returning to shore nearly impossible, requiring outside assistance or rescue efforts.
5. Reduced Visibility & Communication
Windy conditions can cause splashing water and spray, reducing visibility and making it harder to hear instructions from guides.
What Happens When We Issue a Wind Warning?
If strong winds are forecasted for your scheduled tour, we will reach out to inform you as soon as possible. For safety reasons, we may have to cancel your booking.
Your Options
In the event of a wind-related cancellation, we offer the following solutions:
Reschedule – We can move you to a different time or day with calmer conditions.
Relocate – If another location is less affected by wind, we may be able to move your tour there.
Refund – If rescheduling or relocating doesn’t work, we can process a full refund.
We understand that cancellations can be disappointing, but safety is our top priority. Our goal is to provide an enjoyable and secure experience, and sometimes that means making the tough call to cancel.
